Leah Geoghegan AGNP-C IFMCP
Board-Certified Adult Primary Care and Functional Medicine Nurse Practitioner
YOU ARE CAPABLE AND WORTHY OF OPTIMAL HEALTH AND HEALING.
Hi, I’m Leah and I provide individuals with high-quality functional medicine--an approach to health care that determines how and why illness occurs and restores health by addressing the root causes of disease. Imagine a life where your body and mind worked with you to show up as the best version of yourself every day.
I create an individualized health plan that equips you with the tools needed to naturally balance your body, restore function, and alleviate pain and suffering. My goal is for you to become an expert at your own health care so you can achieve your fullest potential without loss of function. I do this by investing time in getting to know you. I listen and ask questions to understand your story and use this information to identify potential areas of imbalance. I order comprehensive testing to learn more about your body and take the time to explain in detail what these tests mean and how they relate to your health.
This is not a quick fix approach to medicine. It is a process where I teach you about your body and how it works to empower you to take the best care of yourself as possible. I am with you every step of the way and make this work enjoyable, motivating, and effective.
I have worked in health care for over 6 years both in the hospital and private practice. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Global Health and received my Master’s degree from New York University’s world-renowned Adult Primary and Holistic Care programs. My functional medicine training is through the Institute for Functional Medicine and I am a certified medical marijuana prescriber.
I have healed hundreds of clients with my treatment method who were told by other providers that their conditions were chronic or not real. Optimal health is achievable with the right support and self-efficacy. Working with me, you will have more energy, confidence, and self-awareness to manage your health in a way that makes you resilient and prepared to handle any challenge thrown your way.
WHAT IS A NURSE PRACTITIONER (NP)?
A nurse practitioner is a nurse who has received an advanced degree that allows them to provide primary, acute or specialty care to patients through the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of various health conditions.
NPs are licensed by the state and have passed a national board exam similar to the test given to physicians, only they have been trained under the nursing model of health care. The nursing model of care is patient-centered and holistic in nature, focusing on how family, behavior, spirituality, and lifestyle influence health care decisions and outcomes. At a minimum, a nurse practitioner goes through four years of undergraduate study, a period of at least one to two years of work as a registered nurse, followed by two to four years of additional schooling to obtain either a master's or doctorate degree in nursing.
HOW IS AN NP DIFFERENT FROM A PHYSICIAN?
In primary and urgent care settings, studies have shown that health status, quality of life, mortality, and hospitalization data of people under the care of a nurse practitioner are equivalent to those of a physician. In NY State, NPs are able to work independently to assess and diagnose medical conditions, prescribe medications, and design treatment plans. Nurse Practitioners are able to open up their own medical practices. NPs can also become doctors by receiving their doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) degree. The main difference between the NP and physician role is that NPs cannot be licensed to perform surgery.
OUR VALUES GUIDE HOW AND
WHY WE DO THIS WORK
LISTEN TO THE BODY
We believe in the body’s innate ability to self-heal and strive to listen to what the body needs when offering care. We treat the whole person, not just symptoms
or body parts.
No two people are the same, and neither should their health care. We invest time in getting to know you so we can design an individualized health program
that aligns with your goals.
You are an equal partner in the decision-making process for your health. Our role is to educate and empower you to trust yourself with this responsibility.
We are passionate about providing a safe, supportive community, where people have the opportunity to heal and learn from one another as well as the provider.
